PEANA is delighted to present its participation at Frieze New York 2020 featuring the work of Tezontle in collaboration with KASMIN.
Earlier this year, the artist duo Tezontle (Lucas Cantu and Carlos H. Matos) spent two months at Casa Wabi, the isolated residency on the idyllic coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Tezontle established a temporary workshop within the residency’s Tadao Ando-designed concrete structures. There, they experimented with earth and minerals sourced directly from the region, resulting in a new body of cast sand and clay sculptures, which exude luminous, oxidized tones of ochre and rust, due to the high iron content found in the soil beneath Casa Wabi. Tezontle adapted their signature casting techniques to this elemental and rustic environment, producing timeless, quasi-geological artifacts that of mysterious form.
For this edition of Frieze, PEANA & KASMIN presents a selection of pieces from Tezontle’s new body of work, complemented by concrete and aluminum sculptures forged in their Mexico City studio with their signature casting processes.
